In Virginia, one vote determined the balance of power in that state and what path leaders will take in the foreseeable future.

Last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released data on changes in union membership from 2016 to 2017. It was good news for workers, as the total number of union members grew by 262,000 in 2017. Three-fourths of these gains (198,000) were among workers aged 34 and under, who account for less than 40 percent of total employment.

A new Gallup Poll released on Labor Day weekend found that 61% of American adults approve of organized labor — the highest percentage since 2003, when approval was at 65%.

The 2017 approval rate is up 5 percentage points from last year and 13 points above the all-time low of 48% in 2009.

Americans have normally shown significant support for unions throughout most of the 20th and 21st centuries, regardless of what prevailing ideologies existed at the time.

The approval rating was 71% in 1930, and it peaked in the 1950s at 75%.

Just in time for Labor Day, the Economic Policy Institute again reminded its readers “today’s unions help working people” by “giving them the power to improve their jobs and unrig the economy” from corporate dominance.

Whether policymakers in Washington and many state capitals are listening is dubious.
